Our Top 10 Reasons to Learn Spanish

Why learn a foreign language? Can it really benefit your future?
As far as we’re concerned, learning a second language is a life skill that can benefit you in so many ways. Here are our top 10 reasons why you should learn a foreign language… and why that language should be Spanish!

1. New language, new friends

Learning a new language like Spanish can open a whole new world of friends up to you. Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world (one place higher than English). It is spoken in Spain of course and also across nearly all of Central and South America; totaling more than 350 million native speakers!

What’s more, over 70 million people speak Spanish as their second language. So, if you learn Spanish too, think how many more people you can connect with that you couldn’t have spoken to  previously! … A lot.

2. Travel made easier

Speaking Spanish can make traveling much easier when going through native Spanish countries. If you don’t speak the language, there can be so many misunderstandings! However if you can speak Spanish, you can ask locals for directions, tips or advice, which can be very useful in a totally foreign place. Also, if you know Spanish this shows respect to the people of the country and makes your life a lot easier when trying to navigate your way around!

3. Higher self-esteem

At first, learning a foreign language can be tough and at times, intimidating! But as you progress, and you find your way in conversations with native speakers, this helps you to grow in confidence. Putting your new skill into action and being understood is very satisfying! All of a sudden, you are the person others are looking at and saying, I wish I could speak Spanish like them. Perseverance is the key.

4. More ‘employable’

These days, standing out in the job market is crucial. Bilingual speakers are valued, especially in countries such as the US where there are many native Spanish speakers too. Being able to speak two languages allows you to communicate with more communities and relate to more people. Therefore, any customer service related job would be more interested in you if you have a second language to boast!

5. Global markets

As well as customer service type jobs, employers with international markets are on the lookout for employees with strong language skills, to be able to relate better with clients and partners in other countries. Learning Spanish opens a huge market to your company or your employer, and can definitely set you apart when it comes to international trade and forming global partnerships.

6. More creative

Recent research studies have shown that multilingual speakers are likely to be more creative! They say this is because when learning a new language you are forced to try out new words and phrases, if you can’t remember the word you are looking for. So your mind becomes more experimental and creative, as you are required to find alternate solutions. A definite plus when learning new life skills and when entering the real world of business.

7. Open your mind

Traveling is a key factor to opening your mind to new cultures and people. Learning a foreign language is the same. There is a famous quote by Ludwig Wittgenstein «The limits of my language are the limits of my world».

Learning Spanish can open your mind to new viewpoints and new perspectives as you are able to look at the world through this new language. You’ll find they have words for things that in English there isn’t a word for. Also, you’ll find many new expressions and idioms related to every day life, that perhaps you hadn’t considered before.

8. Learn one, learn another

It really is like anything in life; the more you practice, the better you get. If you learn a second language your brain gains muscle memory in a sense. It acquires the learning techniques used to process a language and therefore, when trying to learn a third language or more, these basic techniques are set in place and you’ll find yourself remembering words and grammatical structures quicker than you did before.

9. More intelligent

They say that second language speakers have increased mental abilities and a higher attention span. Studies have also shown second language speakers to be more rational and logical, better decision makers and generally more aware and perceptive of their surroundings. All of these qualities are not only related to language but to life in general!

10. Expanding your life’s potential

Last but by no means least, learning Spanish can broaden your horizons and open up so many new doors for you that were not there before. As a bilingual speaker, you can work abroad more easily. You could even move abroad and live in a new country, taking your business with you.
Whatever job you have, adding Spanish to your resume can only better your opportunities. You can work with Spanish clients, work for an international company that interacts with Spanish speakers and partner with Spanish companies. The possibilities are endless!
